Make a Difference DayFrom HandsOn Genesee

In honor of Make a Difference Day, five Flint area colleges and universities are hosting a joint effort to write cards and letters to U.S. military service members. Baker College of Flint, Davenport University, Kettering University, Mott Community College and University of Michigan-Flint are all participating. HandsOn Genesee, the volunteer center for Flint and Genesee County is providing support for the effort.

On Thursday, October 25, from 9am-4pm, each school will set up a table in a central area with supplies for students, staff and community members to write cards and letters to members of the U.S. military serving overseas. Volunteers will staff each site.

HandsOn Genesee Volunteer Expo Comes to UM-Flint

HandsOn Genesee Volunteer ExpoIf you’re looking for a way to make a difference in the community, the HandsOn Genesee Volunteer Expo is one-stop shopping for your next volunteer opportunity.

More than 35 charity and nonprofit groups in need of volunteers will be on hand to talk to those interested in volunteering. The Volunteer Expo runs from 3-7pm, Thursday, Oct. 11 at University of Michigan – Flint’s University Center, which is located next to the Recreation Center. The event is free and open to the public. On-campus parking is also free.

“Last year we had 400 people come through the doors in just four hours, all looking for a way to give back to the community,” said Julia Zaher, Director of HandsOn Genesee. “Visitors can find out how their interests and skills match up with the needs of great nonprofit organizations here.”
