Celebrate Independence Day At Crossroads This Week!

Strawberry Ice Cream ConeThis is one of those weeks where there are a hundred things to do and the hard part becomes deciding what exactly you want to do most.  Too often we default to the most convenient thing or the thing we always do but the only way to find true adventure is to go looking for it and the only way to do that is to do something different.  This week Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad has two opportunities to celebrate the Fourth in fun and unique ways.

July 3 will bring the Flint Symphony Orchestra to Crossroads as a kick off to the 2014 Music in the Parks series and they’ll be playing patriotic music starting at 7PM and running until 9PM. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs for this free show and if you get a little hungry or thirsty the park will have their concessions open for business.

On the Fourth there will be games, a carnival mid-way, and everyone’s favorite – an Ice Cream Social.  Instead of dealing with loud crowds and the stress of arriving hours early so you can get a good spot to see forty minutes of fireworks you can step back in time and have a simpler, stress free celebration. The Fourth is a wonderful time to visit Crossroads and to remind ourselves what America used to look like and of the many struggles that were overcome to get us to where we are today.  And, you know, there’s ice cream!

Crossroads Village in northeast Genesee County is one of the most unique tourist destinations in Michigan. Every time I visit I asked myself why I don’t come more often. It’s like taking a trip back in time to an authentic Great Lakes town from the turn of the last century, with more than 34 historic structures. (Photo by Bruce Edwards)
