Saturday, July 13 will bring another Buckham Alley Fest and an entire evening of fun and music and it will also feature the return of the Buckham Spelling Bee.  The Bee is the brainchild of the Genesee Regional Young Professionals organization, a young professional group focused on Professional Development and volunteerism, and this won’t be your average spelling bee.  This Bee is just for the adults and to the winner of this particular contest go the spoils of a $1000 prize.  This is definitely not the spelling bee of your childhood.  Sod dust off your dictionaries and get ready because the Buckham Spelling Bee is fast approaching.

The ‘buzz’ around Flint: The GRYP Buckham Bee

FLINT, Michigan — On Saturday, July 16, the Genesee Regional Young Professionals (GRYP) will present The Buckham Bee, an offbeat and fun adult spelling bee held during the inaugural Buckham Alley Festival in Downtown Flint.  Through four area sponsors, Baker College of Flint, Elga Vibe, Whigville Party Store, and the Flint Journal, GRYP will award the alpha speller a cash prize of $1,000 for first place.

“GRYP wanted to bring something new to Genesee County for the Buckham Alley Festival and The Buckham Bee is a fresh, hip, and kind of nerdy idea with a nostalgic feel,” said Katrina Khouri, Co-Chair of the Volunteer Committee of GRYP and PR Specialist at Financial Plus Federal Credit Union. Khouri added, “Our purpose is to promote camaraderie among young adults in the area, while raising money for our professional development scholarship fund. The Buckham Bee provides a unique and entertaining framework for both.”

The spelling bee will be held under the GRYP tent on the north end of Buckham Alley, just south of Kearsley Street from 6:00 p.m., July 16 to 12:00 a.m., July 17. Registration is open to anyone 21 and older, but limited to 30 contestants. Challengers must register through the GRYP website, www.thegrcc.org/gryp. Registration is $30 through July 14.
