A Weekend For Festivals

tokyo-ferris-wheel-odaibaYou can tell that summer has finally arrived now that all of the area’s festivals are kicking into full swing.  This is one of those weekends where truly, if you can’t find something fun to do with your friends and family then the problem is you!

‘Fun In The Sun’ Flushing Summer Festival

Kicking off with a Luau Parade and duck race things only get better with rides, several music performances, and a talent show for local country acts. Truly, there is plenty to keep everyone busy.

Linden Mills Days Festival

Along with the usual midway fun there will be a car show, fireworks, an ‘80’s hairdo contest and more. The highlight may well be the Highland Games though which has kilted competitors testing their skills, stamina, and power in several feats of strength such as the Stone Put, the Kaber Toss, the Hammer Throw and more. Now they just have to make a strong wind doesn’t play heck with those kilts…

Greek Festival

The Greek Festival returns to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church for this weekend celebration of Greek traditions and culture. There will be LOTS of Greek food on hand as well as entertainment for the whole family. Foodies may want to make a special trip out to the Greek Festival because I have a feeling that your mouth won’t stop watering until you do.

2014 Flint Art Fair

If you are looking for a more relaxed pace with a touch of the arts then you might want to head out to the 47th Annual Flint Art Fair this weekend where dozens of artists will be on hand with their arts and crafts for sale on the grounds of the Flint Institute of Arts. Along with the artists there will be food vendors for when you get hungry and thirsty and music to keep you moving. This is the perfect event for the patrons of the arts out there and for people looking to add to their art collection.

A Day Of Peace and Remembrance

This is an event that is a little more serious than the others but is a wonderful way to get involved in the community. The focus here is a Unity March and a Community Expo just outside of Downtown Flint. Things kick off at 11AM with the Unity March where participants will walk together to promote peace and people are encouraged to bring memorial tributes to their loved ones. This will be followed up by a Community Expo with dozens of organizations offering information on the many services they provide. There will be free food for all that attend as well. Later in the evening there will be a Gospel Fest to end the evening with musical fellowship.

And along with all of THIS there’s also the opening of the new Flint Farmer’s Market site so there is no shortage of things to see, hear, and experience this weekend. It’s the kind of weekend that makes this area so special and reminds you of the diversity and wonder our area holds and truly beckons you to see and be seen.
