Flint Community Schools and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, in partnership with the Crim Fitness Foundation, will be hosting the second annual “Healthy Hike” on Saturday (June 4) at the Flint Farmers’ Market. This event will begin at 10 a.m. with registration starting at 9:30 a.m.
In 2009, Eisenhower Elementary in Flint was granted a Blue Cross Blue Shield Grant to help create healthier communities. This Building Healthy Communities grant has added fitness equipment and professional development training for teachers at Flint Community Schools to better serve the needs of children.
Blue Cross Blue Shield has provided a new twist in experiencing physical education. “Everything from cardio kickboxing to dribbling with Lamar Odom is explored in a digital lesson thanks to the HopSports system now in place,” said Mike Maienbrook, physical education teacher for Flint Community Schools.
The Building Healthy Communities grant also allows for a culminating run/walk. The purpose of this walk is to get students involved in the program—as well as families and the community—moving in a fun, easy way.
The event also aligns with the Crim Fitness Foundation’s CrimFit Youth Program, which gets students in Flint Community Schools moving throughout the school year. The Crim Fitness Foundation is committed to fighting childhood obesity by providing physical activity opportunities to Flint students with mileage clubs and nutrition education through PE-Nut (Physical Activity and Nutrition Working Together—made possible by USDA’s SNAP-Ed funds by way of Michigan Nutrition Network).
“The Crim Fitness Foundation and Flint Community Schools have always had a very successful partnership thanks to a generous grant from the Ruth Mott Foundation. We truly enjoy working with the students and staff to promote health and fitness activities throughout the year,” said Erin Lamb, Youth Program Director for the Crim Fitness Foundation.
Participants can register the day of the event for $5 (or $10 per family) and the first 200 will receive a “Healthy Hike” t-shirt and finisher bag. The 3K run utilizes the Flint River Trail and ends back at the Flint Farmers’ Market.
