The Hospitality industry is one that we all use but tend to forget that we’re using…unless they do a lousy job serving us. Too often the people who check us into our hotel rooms, serve us our food and drinks, and who help us get to where we need to go are overlooked in our rush to get to the next place but once every year these forgotten members of the Hospitality industry are given their due at the Hospitality Awards. This year marks the 25th Anniversary for the Flint & Genesee Convention & Visitors Bureau Hospitality Awards and it was a night to remember. CVB Director Cheryl DeFrain and Emcee Theo Valley oversaw this evening that shined a light on all of the many people that deserve recognition for everything they do to make your stay, meal, and trip smoother and more enjoyable. Throughout the year patrons have been asked to fill out survey cards in restaurants, hotels, and other establishments to nominate the places they love to eat, drink, and stay for their exemplary service. People were also asked to list standout employees that went above and beyond what was needed so those people can be acknowledged as well. On Thursday, May 23 these people and places that remind us how much we rely on the Hospitality industry were honored and had a night just for themselves. Not very often do we get a chance to say thank you to the people that make sure our leisure time is as fun and stress free as possible and the Flint & Genesee Convention & Visitors Bureau and their 25th Annual Hospitality Awards made sure all of those folks know how much we appreciate their hard work.

Things run on Saturday from 2PM – 6PM in Downtown Flint.

Sunday will allow community members to get their green thumbs dirty as the DDA holds its annual Flower Planting. Every year people from around the city get together to help beautify the downtown before the many festivals and events by planting flowers in the DDA planters and this year will be no different. Keep Genesee County Beautiful will provide the gloves and trowels while Landaal Packaging, one of downtown’s newest businesses, will be supplying the refreshments. The planting will begin at 1:30PM in the DDA Flat Lot parking lot in Downtown Flint, across from the University Pavilion.

For more information head to the Flint DDA website – http://flintdda.org/58/

The HeathlPlus Tour De Crim has more to offer though than just the bike ride and challenges. There will be live entertainment from all ages club Flint Local 432 and there will be micro-brews available from Table & Tap. The tour isn’t just for adults though and there is a bike rodeo for the kids as well as other activities so this is a wonderful chance for families to get out and enjoy the Spring weather together and get some exercise with the ones they love. Riders must register to participate and you can do so on the Crim website and registration will get you a t-shirt, medal, and a beverage as well as 10% off participating restaurants and there will be bikes and helmets to rent if you don’t have wheels but want to take part.

For more information about the Tour De Crim head to the Crim website where you will find out how to register and what will be in store for you if you join the fun. http://crim.org/tourdecrim/

(Monday-Wednesday & Friday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.) Visit the FIA and browse through their outstanding collections of American, European, Native American, African and Asian art including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and decorative arts featuring a complete set of 17th century French tapestries.

“Reflections on Water in American Painting: The Phelan Collection” – These 50 paintings, drawn from the collection of Arthur J. Phelan, illustrate the trends of different artists that shaped American art in transportation and recorded economic shifts as inland maritime commerce slowly diminished in the wake of railroad expansion. Highlights include a rare 1828 painting by John S. Blunt as a U.S. Naval frigate and James Bard’s meticulously rendered Hudson River steamboat.

“Ship Shape: Models of Great Lakes Vessels” – Model shipbuilding is an endangered folk art and an important part of our Great Lakes maritime culture. Drawn from the Dossin Great Lakes Museum in Detroit, this exhibition explores the art of model ships through many examples of various shapes and sizes.

“Great Lakes Painting: The Inlander Collection” – This exhibit forms a remarkable tribute to artists working in the region between 1910 and 1960. The collection is defined geographically featuring artists who worked in those states surrounding the Great Lakes basin: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

“David Maxim Figure Portraits” – San Francisco painter David Maxim has advanced on a broad front, from off-the-wall constructions to images of mountains to whimsical paintings that place historical painters in imagined landscapes. In all his endeavors, Maxim has shown himself to be an accomplished draftsman. Come view what he is best known for, high-relief constructions and classically developed paintings.

“Around the World with 80 Objects” – On display from the FIA’s vault, these far away and long ago authentic objects will captivate and inspire all.

The month of May has been dubbed Love Your City Month in Flint in an effort to inspire residents and community groups to take the initiative and clean the city up and beautify it. With so many events and festivals happening throughout the city this seemed like the perfect opportunity to get things cleaned up before people from around the state and country begin to come for events like the Buckham Alley Fest, Back to the Bricks, Bikes on the Bricks and all the rest that happen through the late Spring and Summer.

The idea to do this rose out of the Cities of Service Impact Volunteer Service Program which was a grant funded project that focused on cleaning a section of the city of all of the debris, trash, and graffiti as well as boarding up abandoned homes. The focus for Love Your City is to clean up all of the trash and brush that has collected over the months in hopes of giving the city and its residents some of its pride and luster back. After all of the trash has been cleaned up and bagged it will be taken away by Republic Services via a partnership with the city.

A the city gets ready for Spring to finally kick in and for the many visitors we have this is a great way to inspire people to take more pride in the city and the neighborhoods and to start making a positive impact.

From the press release –

Residents and businesses seeking more information on how to participate should call the Kearsley Park/Mott Volunteer Service Center at 810-235-5494; the office is open Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm. Resources such as yard bags and work gloves will be available at all 6 Police Volunteer Service Centers while supplies last. Other tools will be made available through the Salem Housing Community Development Corporation Tool Shed at 810-785-5340. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for Flint’s recycling program Fill the Bin Flint and receive their free 18 gallon bin. Full details can be found on the City of Flint’s website or by calling toll free 1-888-872-7455.
